MARY JANE - 3.5% - Ilkley Brewery, U.K. - (Bottle)

beeryweirdo says . . . a light white gold pale ale, rounded flavour, citrus but not too much, easy drinking sweet and smooth with a good bitter finish making it taste stronger than it is. Lovely supple consistency, refreshing, very characterful for such a weak beer. Perfect for sunny days!

SEMER WATER - 5.5% - Wensleydale Brewery, U.K. (Bottle)

TRADE WINDS - 4.3% - Cairngorm, U.K. - (Bottle)

PUNK IPA - 5.6% - Brewdog, U.K. - (Bottle)

beeryweirdo says . . . this beer is described by the brewery as 'assertive' and that is certainly the case. Chinook, Simcoe, Ahtanum and Nelson Sauvin hops produce a ballsy, brash pale ale with a strong up front taste. Quite sticky in the mouth, 'resinous'. Good initial taste, no complexity to speak of but pretty punchy all round.

LONDON STOUT - 4.5% - Meantime Brewery - (Bottle)

beeryweirdo says . . . extremely dark and oily colour, the goldings hops bring an unusually crisp taste to this stout, lovely smooth chocolate and coffee tones on the palate, very elegant and refined body, vanilla, oat and tobacco aromas. Altogether a wonderful drink.

MERRY WHISTLE BLOWER - 3.9% - Elland Brewery - (Cask)

beeryweirdo says . . . delicious nut brown beer with an amber glow, soothing and smooth on the palate, deep malty middle, floral nose, warming and full bodied. Well balanced bitter with a superb malty finish. Served perfectly at the excellent Arcadia in Headingley, Leeds, U.K.

ADMIRALS ALE - 5.0% - St. Austell Brewery, U.K. - (Bottle)

beeryweirdo says . . . red bronze in colour that pours almost pink - surprising! A pleasant malty biscuit aroma. Sweet pudding flavour and mildly spicy. Soft and light in body and melts in the mouth - would work well with a roast dinner! Not really a session beer, more of a fireside ale.

SCAPA SPECIAL - 4.2% - Highland Brewing Company, U.K. - (Bottle)

beeryweirdo says . . . a brilliant amber gold in colour, refreshing light hoppiness with a definite nutty and malty middle. Very unusual as far as pale ale goes! Nice complex flavours and gentle aftertaste. Good session beer with real character. Not obviously a pale ale other than in name but it is nonetheless delicious!

HIGHWIRE - 5.5% - Magic Rock Brewery - (Bottle)

beeryweirdo says . . . a wonderful pale ale with a complex flavour and colour. Mango is strongly present in the aroma. Mrs. Beeryweirdo says it smells like a smoothie! This excellent beer has a lively body and prominent upfront hops. The finish is soft, malty and clean and is followed by a delicious bitter aftertaste. An exceptional beer, sophisticated and eminently drinkable. More please!

PROPER JOB - 5.5% - St. Austell Brewery, U.K. (Bottle)

'Powerfully hopped'.

beeryweirdo says . . . bottle conditioned golden pale ale. Light in the mouth. Very bitter and refreshing. Maris Otter malt with Willamette, Chinook and Cascade hops create a balanced full flavoured zesty beer flavour with a deep grapefruit finish. Lovely aroma, strangely reminds me of the smell of damp english woodland! Strong in the classic IPA tradition, could drink a few of these!

FULL MOKO - 4.2% - Sadlers Ales, U.K. (Cask)

beeryweirdo says . . . bright, shimmering white/honey gold in colour. Very prominent bitter hops taste. Superbly balanced, improving with every mouthful. Quick and dry finish. Not overly citrus but a strong lemon zest in the aftertaste. Delicious black country beer, truly excellent! Served perfectly at the Chemic Tavern, Leeds, U.K.

OSSIAN - 4.1% - Inveralmond Brewery, U.K. (Cask)

'Award winning golden ale'.

beeryweirdo says . . . mid way between amber and gold. Mild hop taste with deep spicy undertones and a little nutty. Very smooth and soft consistency. On the full bodied side of session beer, has a feeling of gravity making it taste good but also rendering it slightly less quaffable!

Sunday, 11 September 2011

KIPLING - 5.2% - Thornbridge Brewery - (Bottle)

beeryweirdo says . . . white gold in colour with a decent head from the bottle. Clean full-bodied beer in the middle of the hop range. A good long and strong bitter aftertaste. Its strength give it substance and it should appeal to a wide range of beer fans.

OXFORD GOLD - 4.0% - Brakspear Brewery, U.K. - (Cask)

beeryweirdo says . . . the combination of pale ale and crystal malts make this wonderful organic golden beer very light and fresh - slightly floral with a citrus nose. Organic goldings and target hops give a subtle honey taste. A perfect beer for a summers evening - very refined.

SPITFIRE - 4.5% - Shepherd Neame - (Bottle)

beeryweirdo says . . . this beer is often wrongly overlooked by the connoisseur due to its mainstream status and widespread popularity. We should be thankful that a beer of such character is readily available - a trusty friend to whom we can return when more exotic treats are unavailable. Amber reddish in colour. It has a burnt toffee flavour with a mid-range fruity finish not dissimilar to christmas cake. The hoppy aftertaste is pleasantly bitter and lasts a while in the mouth. All in all, a good and reliable brew and also an excellent introduction for newcomers to decent beer.
ILKLEY PALE - 4.2% - Ilkley Brewery, U.K. - (Bottle)

'Award winning premium blonde ale. Dry and highly hopped with hints of tropical fruit'.

beeryweirdo says . . . dry and highly hopped is certainly the key here although I'm not so sure about the tropical fruit angle - grassy might be a better description. No hints of citrus but may well appeal to those who enjoy a zesty edge to their ale. Beautiful white gold in colour. A clear and crisp drop, very refreshing.
